The First and Last speaker series arrives in Perth this February, inviting audiences to hear first-hand how creative practices and careers evolve over time - from early, formative projects to recent milestone work. The Perth edition of the series will feature candid reflections from two respected Australian designers, offering insights into how their design philosophies have developed over decades and what has remained constant.
Taking place at King Living's Osborne Park showroom in Perth on February 19, the event will feature presentations by Hamish Guthrie, founding director of Melbourne-based studio Hecker Guthrie, and Katherine Ashe, co-director of Vittino Ashe. Through personal storytelling and project reflections, attendees will gain a rare glimpse into the evolution of creative practice and the lessons learned along the way.
Guthrie will look back to George Street Residence, one of the first houses he completed after leaving a large practice. In contrast, he will share insights from his recent work on Standard X, a 125-room hotel in Melbourne's Fitzroy - a project that reflects both an evolution in scale and ambition, as well as a deep engagement with place and culture.
Ashe will recount the story of MmB - a neighbour's house that seeded a lasting friendship and helped shape the beginnings of her practice. She will then contrast this early work with Eton, her most recent residential project, reflecting on how her design approach and creative priorities have shifted over the course of her career.
First and Last is part of the Design Speaks program, presenting conversations with leading designers that explore practice, context and creative longevity. The Perth session brings this celebrated series to Western Australia, offering students, emerging practitioners and design enthusiasts a chance to engage with the stories behind the work. CPD points can be earned by attending the session.
First and Last is a Design Speaks program organised by Architecture Media and supported by presenting partner King Living. Tickets are now on sale at the Design Speaks website.
