Syria’s $100 Billion Vision: Rebuilding an Ancient Tourism Giant for 2026 and Beyond

In a landmark announcement, Syria’s Tourism Minister, Mazen Al Salhani, revealed that the nation requires an estimated $100 billion in investment over the next seven years to fully revitalize its tourism sector. It is an ambitious figure, but one that reflects a country eager to turn the page toward a future defined by heritage, hospitality, and economic renewal.

Rebuilding a nation’s identity is no small feat. The proposed investment pipeline covers nearly 1,500 tourism establishments that currently sit dormant or damaged. Key focus areas include:

Beyond the stone and mortar of historical sites, the revival of tourism is a lifeline for the Syrian people. The sector’s contribution to the GDP is projected to skyrocket from 15% in 2025 to over 30% by 2030.

Perhaps most importantly, this growth translates into livelihoods. The ministry predicts the creation of 40,000 jobs in 2026 alone, with a long-term goal of employing half a million Syrians in the tourism and hospitality sectors by the end of the decade. This isn’t just about economics; it’s about giving a new generation of Syrians a reason to stay and rebuild their homes.

Turkey, in particular, has seen a tenfold increase in visitors to Syria, spurred by improved political ties and a shared cultural heritage. To ensure these visitors feel safe, the government has deployed 1,500 specialized tourism police officers to provide security and assistance at major sites.

The journey to a $100 billion recovery will not be overnight. It requires the continued easing of international sanctions, such as the imminent repeal of the Caesar Act, and a stabilized national currency. However, the momentum on the ground is undeniable.

From the reopened Souq Khan Al Harir in Aleppo to the medical tourism hubs being developed in coordination with the Ministry of Health, Syria is diversifying its offerings. Whether it is a traveler looking for a high-end cultural retreat or a Syrian expat returning to see their ancestral home, the doors are swinging open.

Syria is no longer just a headline of the past; it is becoming a destination of the future. As the jasmine begins to bloom once more in the courtyards of Damascus, the message to the world is simple: Syria is ready to welcome you back.
